Sometimes only a proper pie will do. At our chippy on Birmingham Road, Bromsgrove, we keep three favourites on the counter: steak and kidney, steak and onion, and chicken and mushroom — each one £4.50, each one hot through with pastry that holds its own against a forkful of chips. Speaking of which: ours are cut from Lincolnshire potatoes and fried in Frymax vegetable oil, and when you order online you can add them straight to any pie, along with a tub of gravy or curry sauce at £1 a pot. Terry and the team have been frying here since 2008, and pies have long earned their place beside the cod and haddock.
