Our Story: Three Generations in the Frying Trade

A trade passed down, not picked up

Some people fall into frying fish. Terry Mouskos was raised in it. He's a third-generation fish fryer — the sort of upbringing where you learn to judge a batter by the sound it makes when it hits the oil, long before anyone hands you a menu to memorise.

Terry took over the shop at 110 Birmingham Road in 2008, and by 2009 he'd given it a full top-to-bottom revamp — new look, same old-fashioned standards. Ever since, Ideal Fish & Chips has done what a proper chippy should: fry to order, keep the chips coming, and send people home with something worth unwrapping in the car park.

What goes in the fryer matters

You can't fry your way out of poor ingredients, so we don't try. Our potatoes come up from Lincolnshire — proper chipping spuds, chosen for flavour and fluff — and everything is fried in Frymax vegetable oil for a clean, crisp finish with none of the heaviness.

We hold a 5-star Food Hygiene Rating from the Food Standards Agency, confirmed at our inspection on 19 July 2024. That's the top rating there is, and we work every service to keep it.

It's a short list of promises, but they're the ones that count: good potatoes, clean oil, a spotless kitchen, and fish fried fresh — not sat under a lamp waiting for you.

More than fish and chips (though we'd understand if you never strayed)

The Large Cod (£9.60) with a portion of our chips is the order this place is known for, and the Large Haddock — same money — runs it close. But a proper local takeaway feeds the whole household, whatever mood they're in:

  • Kebabs — doner, chicken tandoori and chicken med, in pittas, wraps, baps or boxes, with salad and sauce done your way. A Doner Pitta is £7.50.
  • Burgers — from a 1/4lb beef burger at £4.50 to a battered halloumi burger (£6.00) for the veggies.
  • Pies and pasties — steak and kidney, chicken and mushroom or steak and onion pies, plus beef and onion or cheese and onion pasties, all £4.50.
  • Southern fried chicken, sausages, fishcakes and the classic extras — peas, curry sauce and gravy at £1.00 a pot.
  • Kids meals at £4.99, each with chips, a drink and a treat thrown in.

Everything comes out of the same kitchen, to the same standard, made by people who eat it themselves.

Part of Bromsgrove, not just in it

A chippy on the same road for this many years ends up woven into the town. We've wrapped up Friday-night teas, post-match consolations and half-term treats for families from Aston Fields, Sidemoor, Charford, Catshill, Stoke Prior and Marlbrook.

We try to give something back, too. We're active in the local community, including fundraising for Primrose Hospice — a cause close to many hearts around Bromsgrove, and to ours.

When people ask what we're aiming for, the answer's simple: to be the best chippy in Bromsgrove, one order at a time. That's not a claim we get to make — it's a verdict our customers hand down, and one we set out to earn every single service.

What makes a proper chippy?

Ask Terry and you'll get a straight answer. Fish fried when you order it, not before. Chips cut from real potatoes, grown for the job. Salt and vinegar offered, never assumed. A kitchen you'd happily inspect yourself. And a welcome that remembers your usual.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to at Ideal Fish & Chips, and you're very welcome to come and judge us on it.
